“The Century of the Self” response
In response to the documentary, what I thought was most interesting dealt with what A Abril (not sure of the name) was trying to convince Bernays. He said that smoking a cigarette was a symbol of the penis and that if women smoked them, they would have their own themselves. I thought this was an interesting way of marketing cigarettes. It shows the difference in time about how equality between men and women was a big priority in women’s lives. Now, other marketing ways are used to get the same desire for the product across. Mostly now, companies use the image of smoking ‘cool’. It’s amazing to see how things have changed.
